Additional Information

Tackling the Opioid Crisis in Rural Arkansas brings together community leaders and clinicians who offer pain management and medication-assisted therapy in rural  primary care and specialty settings through insightful experiences and evidence-based risk reduction strategies.

Although opioid prescribing in Arkansas decreased by 40% from 2014 to 2020, we continued to have the second highest rate of prescribing in the United States, 75% above the national average. Providing collaborative and educational opportunities for physicians, physicians assistants, advance practice registered nurses, pharmacists, social workers, substance use counselors, etc. and community leaders to work together can positively impact that trend.

Topics include:

  • The opioid crisis in Arkansas
  • Arkansas Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (AR PDMP): A critical link in the chain of prevention
  • Tips and tools for evaluating Substance Use Disorder (SUD) risk
  • Community-focused strategies to combat opioid misuse and overdose
  • Resources for patients at risk
  • Difficult discussions with complex patients

The mission of the Arkansas Nurse Practitioner Association is to unite, support, educate and enhance the professional identity of nurse practitioners in Arkansas, while promoting and advocating for excellence in practice.  Our collective concern for the people impacted by the opioid crisis in Arkansas can translate to sensible opioid prescribing, strengthened support networks and healthier patients and communities.

This seminar will take place at the El Dorado Conference Center from 9:30-4pm, Friday, November 1. Refreshments and lunch will be served. The event is funded by a grant from the Office of the Attorney General of Arkansas. Continuing education information is coming soon.
