Arkansas Nurse Practitioner Association Member Spotlight: Deborah Shirey, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC

I started out in journalism and fell into nursing accidentally following traumatic childbirth. I had excellent teachers and mentors who instilled confidence in me. Working in ER also prepared me for life as an NP, and journalism prepared me to write and present. I had great leaders who paved the way!

What is your biggest success to date?

Finishing my DNP and moving into higher education as an Associate Dean. I never thought I could or would, but I did. I can now give back to students and newer faculty, and I absolutely love it!

What has been your biggest challenge?

Saying "no". I love to work and enjoy being part of a team. Even at my age, I am still excited about learning new things and meeting other NPs. It's hard to say "no" when the role still excites you so much.

What inspires you to hit the ground running each morning?

Seeing my dogs. They are so happy to see us first thing in the morning and that brings me joy. I'm also a morning person, so that helps.

What’s an interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?

I am a Certified Master Holistic Nutritionist and licensed Zumba instructor.

When you’re not working, what is your favorite thing to do?

Cook, play golf or pickleball.
