Update on HB1160 and HB 1136

HB1160, the proposal to authorize the prescribing of schedule II medications for nurse practitioners in Arkansas, was not passed out of the Senate today. The bill will not continue to move during this legislative session.

The Arkansas Nurse Practitioner Association, its members, and its supporters are obviously disappointed that the Senate did not pass this bill.  Nevertheless, we are grateful to Representative Hammer for his tireless efforts to ensure that all Arkansans will have access to a health care provider who is able to work to the fullest extent of their education, training and expertise.

We also want to thank the many ANPA members, ARNA members, and allies who have given their time to take part in our grassroots campaigns in support of this bill.  For the bill to have advanced to within one step of the Governor's desk has been a historic achievement in its own right.  This could not have happened without your help and support.

Even though HB 1160 will not continue to move this year, support for the concept of more autonomy for Nurse Practitioners in Arkansas continues to grow.  HB 1136, a bill which authorizes Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistance to prescribe hydrocodone agents as is specified in their collaborative practice agreement, has been signed in to law. Continue to watch for news and information through this website as this bill moves forward into the regulatory phase.

The ANPA will continue to organize and advocate for nurse practitioners' ability to play an even greater role in Arkansas' health care delivery system.  As the next steps in the effort are developed, look to ANPA for the latest information.
